UTEC: The University which has been awarded the RIBA International Prize for being a building designed with people at its heart

 

It is the best building of 2016, according to the Royal Institute of British Architects. As an outstanding example of civil architecture; a building designed for people", as it was described by the RIBA. Its architects, Grafton Architects and Shell Arquitectos, were awarded for "projecting a vertical campus that responds to the temperate climatic conditions and is a reference to the Peruvian territory and heritage".

The new campus UTEC was projected as "a man-made cliff", which is integrated into the surrounding landscape, thus creating a new topography of the city of Lima. Located on difficult terrain, with a busy avenue on one side and the residential district of Barranco on the other, the campus is structured vertically. The north front - or cliff - is the principal element of the design, while the southern front is distributed over a series of gardens.

 

Its nine floors house classrooms, offices, research laboratories, an auditorium, library and social areas, as well as a theatre, a cinema, a café and a restaurant. These social spaces have been located on the 0 level, to encourage the socio-cultural interaction with the public, as well as the larger-scale volumes and the labs, which are exhibited to the public. On the other hand, the teaching and administrative areas, as well as the offices of the professors, are located on the higher floors.

The shape of the building adjusts to the internal structure, as well as the inclusion of terraced gardens on all floors, to create a more pleasant environment and provide shade, enhanced ventilation and natural lighting to the interior areas. The harmony between the city and the building is perceived differently from each floor, as one travels upwards to the top floors.  

 

Challenge of the project and the supplied product

Concrete, naked walls and an air of brutalism with the purpose of directing attention onto the stage... this is the auditorium which Grafton Architects and Shell Arquitectos designed for this University of Technology. The main challenge of this project was to maximize the capacity of an area bounded by the uniqueness of the structure of the building, and to comply with the stringent safety regulations applicable in Peru.

 

320 seats are situated on two levels, and are divided by a diagonal corridor, which motivated the perfect fit of the seats, according to this original solution for the central staircase. As a result of this diagonal separation, each row of seats is arranged in 4 blocks of seats, and is different from the preceding and the subsequent row. To structure the room according to this scheme, seats with 5 slightly different widths were installed.

The selected model, the resistant and practical 5036 TOP seat - one of Figueras´ best-selling models worldwide - adapts to each row for exceptional visibility. The seating surface of the seat was modified slightly to increase the distance between the rows and thus comply with the Peruvian legislation. This change does not affect its comfort and performance. The chosen colour, oil-grey, integrates perfectly with the austere auditorium, contrasting with its cement-grey walls.
