Juan Navarro Baldeweg (Santander, 1939) is internationally acclaimed for his architectural projects, paintings and sculptures. In 1965 he graduated from the Polytechnic University of Madrid’s Higher Technical School of Architecture, and four years later he earned a doctorate degree from the same institution. He has worked as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, the University of Pennsylvania and Yale. Early in his career he worked for the architectural practice of Alejandro de la Sota.
In 1998 Baldeweg received the Heinrich Tessenow Gold Medal (awarded by Alfred Toepfer Stiftung FVS) for the body of his work. In 2008 he won the Gold Medal for Architecture in Spain. His architectural projects include the Casa de la Lluvia in Santander, the design of the Altamira Cave Museum, the Palacio de Festivales in Salamanca, and the Salzburg Congress Centre.
