Teatros Canal
Madrid, Spain

Teatros Canal is a new cultural complex that aspires to become a major performing arts venue both within Spain and at the international level. The project underscores the urban renewal that has taken place in the Chamberí District, an important area in Madrid. According to Juan Navarro Baldeweg, the project should be understood as a universe where illusion and fantasy shape architecture.  ‘The main theatre must be both integrated and segregated: city life must be drawn to the space, but there must also be a separation, a break that protects the core of virtuality, which, by its very nature, is something apart from the surrounding reality of the city,’ says the architect.
