The Sage Gateshead is intended to be a place where people can enjoy, create and learn about music. Planning for the centre focused on achieving three main objectives:
-Auditoriums had to have excellent acoustics.
-The centre needed to serve as a public space accessible to a broad spectrum of society.
-The Sage had to be the focal point for regeneration of the Gateshead Quays area.
