The Television Academy Saban Media Center Wolf Theater

Arch. Gensler

Highly comfortable auditorium seats for where they present the Emmy awards

The Television Academy, known worldwide for producing the annual  Emmy awards, required a new space to accommodate the changes taking place in the television industry. The existing theater had become obsolete. Gensler was selected to design the new facility, and work was completed on the Saban Media Center in the summer of 2016.

The principal objective of the new building was to reflect the innovative and detailed spirit characterizing the Television Academy. This high-tech theater includes a new stage, premium Figueras seats, digital connectivity, 4K and 3D projectors, as well as a hall equipped with Chroma Key capability.  Lee Pasteris, Design Director and Principal at Gensler designed a more flexible and adaptable space, allowing the Saban Media CenterWolf Theater to adapt and evolve along with the progression of new technologies.

Project Challenge

An auditorium with such advanced technology called for the latest generation of innovatively designed seating. For Figueras, the project challenge was to provide a chair of ample dimensions, elegant design, and extraordinary comfort that would optimize the available interior space.

In keeping with the architects’ design concept for the space, the team at Figueras adapted the versatile Smart chair into four different types, with project driven on-center dimensions, allowing 595 seats to fit comfortably into the hall creating a uniform and harmonious space.  In addition, ten of the seats are completely removable so that, in their place, a sound stage can be set up where all necessary equipment can be positioned for the recording of performances.

The entire installation complies with strict ADA regulations. In five of the rows, the first seat of each row is equipped with an integrated transfer arm system, which allows for comfortable lateral access by effortlessly opening the arm.  This was accomplished without compromising the aesthetic of the seat.

Supplied Product

The theater has been equipped with 595 Figueras model 13010 Smart chairs, finished in an elegant Bordeaux red. This is a highly-comfortable, modular seat with generous dimensions specially designed for use in premium halls. In the  Wolf Theater, these chairs are positioned in such a way that spectators can access their seats comfortably without disturbing other spectators.

Figueras considered eventhe smallest details with this project. For example, theaisle lightingintegrated into seats operates at a frequency that does not interfere with the digital recording taking place in the auditorium.  ADA positions look identical to the standard seat, removable chairs are interspersed throughout the space unobtrusively, for an uninterrupted aesthetic.
