Musée d’Orsay Auditorium

The Orsay Museum is housed in the former Gare d’Orsay, an impressive Beaux-Arts railway station, designed for the 1900 Universal Exhibition.

The Musée d’Orsay is organized on three levels: the ground floor, where galleries are distributed on either side of the central nave, which is overlooked by the terraces of the median level, these in turn opening up into additional exhibition galleries, and the top floor, which is installed above the lobby. The museum also houses a restaurant, a bookshop and an auditorium.

Designed more than twenty years ago, the auditorium has recently faced a renovation. As the architect Antoine Rouzeau explained us, the problem of accessibility for people with reduced mobility was indeed insufficient, so this issue was at the origin of this operation.

This prestigious area hosts a wide range of performances: from shadow theater to opera, philharmonic orchestral concerts, cinematographic performances and conferences are also scheduled. The auditorium's mission is to present all forms of events.

When we asked Mr. Rouzeau what were the "musts" for him in the renovation of this project, he answered: „The refurbishment was an opportunity for us to modernize the auditorium and renew the floor and armchairs that dated back to 1986. We slightly revised the configuration of the room, but the challenge was to keep the maximum of seating capacity. The distance between the old chairs has been preserved“.

Located at level -2, under the reception area of the museum, this intimate room has exceptional acoustics, so the modernization also meant a challenge for Figueras, as the designer and manufacturer for the seating equipment.

The renovation of the space included a total area of 340 m² with 330 automatic folding seats, under the requirements of an elegant design and leather finishing, offering the widest seating possible for the user comfort, while assuring durability, without forgetting fire resistance certification, in accordance with French standards.
Figueras Made to Measure division is the answer for projects like this, that need to integrate complex acoustic and technical requirements with unique design features.
