Y Ffwrnes Theatre

Arch. Cardiff Architects Lawray

Seating system for a theatre with multiple configurations

Y Ffwrnes Theatre (Llanelli, UK)

High technology for a unique multipurpose theatre

Y Ffwrnes (The Furnace) is a new Welsh cultural centre that is ideal for staging all types of performances, thanks to its two multifunctional theatres. It is an architectural project of Cardiff Architects Lawray, in collaboration with the theatre consultancy firm ACT Consultant Services.

This structure is unique for its architecture and for the design of its two highly versatile, adaptable theatres, which are a major cultural asset to the local community. ACT Consultant Services planned a theatre with a modern, contemporary feel to appeal to a wide range of users. Design inspiration was taken from the colours of the local smelting furnaces which are reflected in the range of colours used for decoration and upholstery fabrics in the interiors.

Challenges and solutions

The initial challenge for the architects was the site development: a combination of new-build, restoration and re-development of existing buildings including two listed chapels. Since the beginning the main challenge was making this building a multi-purpose venue without increasing costs to much and making the investment easy to recover. That is why proprietors, architects and the theatre consultants decided that the two theatres inside –a Main Theatre from 100 to 650 seats and a smaller theatre for 100 people- had to be equipped with automatic systems.

Product supplied

The Main Theatre has capacity for between 100 and 650 people. It can be used for standing events or for cabaret, auditions and lectures. The main theatre audience seating is in three parts: the fixed seated balcony, the retractable tiered seated stalls and the three-row tiered seating wagon to the stalls front. These parts can be used in various combinations to suit the required presentation and audience capacity. The Main Theatre stalls features a telescopic tribune comprising 300 MiniSpace seats of different colours that reflect the industrial furnaces of the local region. In the amphitheatre seat was used a wider seat: the Carmen model. The smaller theatre, called Stiwdio Stepni is inside a converted Chapel and it is intended for more intimate performances. It has also a flexible automatic seating system for setting different configurations. This eight-part tiered seating system is moved on air-film technology and comprises the 5067 MiniSpace, which enables the maximum optimization of the space.
